Poor match at the Falkirk ends in a stalemate

A poor game at Falkirk's new stadium ended with Clyde taking a point back to Broadwood after a stout defensive display. Clyde dropped Aron Wilford, who had a poisoned toe and were also missing Michael Marsiglia and Jimmy Gibson. Gary Bollan came back into the side as Clyde lined up with a 451 formation:

Halliwell
Mensing Wilson Potter Bollan
Arbuckle Sheridan Bryson Walker Malone
Harty

Falkirk dropped 'keeper Darren Hill, who conceded 8 goals at Parkhead. Allan Ferguson came back in after injury. Other than that, they were unchanged, with Daryll Duffy and Andy Thomson looking like an impressive pairing up front:

Ferguson
Lawrie Campbell James McPherson
McKenzie
Nicholls O'Neil
Latapy
Duffy Thomson

Falkirk's diamond in midfield took control early on and they were spreading the ball impressively to their attacking fullbacks. After a couple of near things, in the 19th minute, their leftback, Craig McPherson hit the bye-line and whipped over a low cross which Andy Thomson knocked home.

Clyde still couldn't get into a passing game and John O'Neil's long range strike was well tipped over by Halliwell. Duffy's header then brought out another smart stop from the Clyde 'keeper. Falkirk then seemed to take their foot off of the gas and the match settled into a dull encounter, with Falkirk's creative influence, Russell Latapy being man-marked out of the game by Craig Bryson and Clyde only having one player up front. The only real excitement came for a couple of dubious bookings for Bollan and Eddie Malone. Before half time, Simon Mensing and Gary Arbuckle both had efforts but neither troubled Ferguson.

The second half saw more of the same as Falkirk tried to create a second goal but Clyde easily contained them. At the other end, Clyde were creating nothing of note, but when they got forward the Falkirk backline looked shaky. This was no more evident than when Clyde eventually got their equaliser. A clever freekick by Sheridan was met by Ian Harty's glancing header and Clyde were level. The match then petered out to a draw with Latapy's low drive the only effort of the last 10 minutes.

Clyde set out for a point and got one with a predator's finish from Harty. He only had one sniff of goal in the game and he took his chance excellently. Falkirk were superb going forward at times but Clyde held out superbly. The disappointing thing is that Falkirk were very shaky at the back and if Clyde had put on more pressure, they could've possibly even snatched a win. 17 points from 8 games is an excellent record and a win on Saturday against St Johnstone would give Clyde 20 points, roughly half of the survival target for this season, with only a quarter gone.

Clyde's star men on Saturday were 'keeper Bryn Halliwell, who's kicking was his only downpoint. Arbuckle ran his heart out on the wing and gives Clyde some flair and power. The two contenders for my Man of the Match are Craig Bryson and Scott Wilson. Bryson, a 17 year old, did an excellent job in marking the dangerous Latapy out of the match. However Wilson was a rock at the centre of defence and gets better every week and he just shades it.
