Hamilton looked set to finish fourth in the first division following this 2-0 victory against rivals for that spot, Clyde.

A goal in the first minute by Brian Wake, who was later sent off, and a goal in the last minute by Mark Gilhaney proved the difference on the day, although Clyde will perhaps feel aggrieved not to return home with at least a point.

Wake's opener came when Juanjo broke free on the left and crossed low for the big striker to squeeze the ball into the bottom right-hand corner after taking a touch.

Clyde replied and Tom Brighton fired wildly over a minute later before Steven Masterton's left-foot shot went narrowly over from 12 yards.

Masterton went close again after nine minutes and Romauld Bouadji then headed inches wide five minutes later.

Juanjo and Alex Neil both missed chances for the home side, who should have increased their lead after 28 minutes. Derek Fleming's cross from the left found Wake, whose effort rebounded off the crossbar, and Steven Thomson's resulting shot finished well over the bar.

Wake shot narrowly wide as the half drew to a close, but after the interval he found the headlines for all the wrong reasons, referee Don Underhill being forced into showing the striker a red card after 55 minutes when Wake responded violently to an off-the-ball tussle with Clyde's Stephen O'Donnell.

The visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser, and Paul McHale, O'Donnell and substitute Dougie Imrie were all denied by Accies' goalkeeper David McEwan.

Then after 90 minutes Billy Reid settled matters at the other end. Gilhaney collected the ball on the right, cut inside and lashed the ball brilliantly past Peter Cherrie to take all three points.
