The club was formed in 1878 in the Rutherglen district of Glasgow. They joined Scottish Division One in 1897-92 when the league was increased to twelve clubs.
In 1893-94 Clyde only finished third in Division Two but were elected to the top division nonetheless.
Clyde's highest league position of 3rd has been achieved on three occasions in 1908-09, 1911-12 and 1966-67. They have won the Division Two title three times since the Premier League came into being, in 1977-78,1981-82 and 1992-93.
The club has enjoyed a great deal of success in the Scottish Cup playing six finals all told. They lost their first final in 1910 to
Dundee 1-2 in a replay and also in 1912 0-2 v
Celtic. Clyde won the trophy at the third attempt beating
Motherwell 4-0 in the 1939 final.
After the Second World War Clyde lost the 1949 final 1-4 against
Rangers but enjoyed more success with victories in 1955 beating Celtic 1-0 in a replay and 1958 when Coyle scored the only goal of the game against
Hibernian.
In 1991 the club left its famous ground at Shawfield to ground share with Hamilton for three seasons until their new ground at Broadwood Stadium was ready.
Post World War Two Clyde played in Khaki coloured shirts for a short spell.
Clyde was named after the river of that name that runs through Glasgow.
